Whether you’re here on a working holiday, a student visa, or starting a new life in Australia, having a car can be a game-changer. No more waiting for buses or running after trains. But let’s be honest — buying a car in a new country can be a little scary.
Don’t worry! We’ve got your back 💪
Here’s everything you need to know about buying a car in Australia — minus the stress.
1. Get a Customer ID First 📇
Before you can buy or register a vehicle in Australia, you’ll need to get a personal customer ID or client number from your state or territory’s transport authority (such as Queensland Transport, Service NSW, or VicRoads).
Visit a transport office in your area with your passport and visa. Once your identity is verified, they’ll issue you the required customer number to proceed with registration.
2. Where to Buy: Car Dealer vs Private Sale

3. PPSR = Your New Best Friend
Before you fall in love with that shiny secondhand car, make sure you check the PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register).
This online check tells you:
- If the car is stolen or written off
- If there’s still money owed on it
- If it has a clear title
It costs around $2 — a small price to avoid big headaches!
4. Don’t Trust RWC Blindly
An RWC (Roadworthy Certificate) only covers basic safety. It won’t tell you if the engine is about to die or if the air con is broken.
👉 Bring a friend who knows cars, or get a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic. It could save you thousands.
5. Registration & Transfer Time
Once you buy the car, you’ll need to transfer the registration (rego) into your name within the allowed time (usually within 14 days — check your state rules).
Some sellers will help with the paperwork, but if not, you’ll need to go to the transport office with:
- Signed transfer papers
- Proof of purchase
- RWC (if required in your state)
- Your CRN
6. Get Car Insurance (Seriously!)
CTP (Compulsory Third Party) insurance is required for rego, but it only covers injury to others — not car damage.
We recommend you also get:
- Third Party Property Insurance – Covers damage to others’ cars
- Comprehensive Insurance – Covers damage to your car and others
